What is Sencha Green Tea?

Clearspring Organic Japanese Sencha Green teaClearspring Organic Japanese Sencha loose-leaf tea is grown in the luscious rolling hills around Kyoto and Kyushu, areas known for their ideal climatic and soil conditions which produces some of the finest teas in Japan.

How is it made?

Once the leaves are picked, they go through the traditional Japanese practice, not usually found elsewhere, of steaming, rolling and drying the green tea leaves immediately after picking. This is known as the ‘Sencha Process’, which takes place within 24 hours of harvesting. It inhibits the enzyme activity that causes oxidisation and enables the tea to retain its bright emerald green leaf colour and preserve its nutritional properties and delicious flavour. When brewed, our Organic Japanese Sencha has a golden green colour and a refreshing aroma which delivers the deliciously perfect balance between astringency and sweetness. It is worth noting that most common tea varieties come from the same plant – Camellia Sinensis. The difference between each tea variant lies in the way the tea is produced and processed.

Clearspring Organic Japanese Sencha Green Tea - Light and Refreshing

What makes Clearspring teas so special?

Our producer, the Nagata family, abandoned modern agriculture dependant on chemicals in 1974 and has been using sustainable organic practices for decades. The expertise of our Organic tea farmers to grow and select the finest leaves and their commitment to the highest Organic standards The sloping land on which the tea plants are grown helps the water to drain and provides better ventilation, which allows for better resistance against disease The Nagata tea gardens are isolated from other tea farms which radically lowers the risks of cross-contamination from agrochemicals like pesticides. The farming methods used to encourage biodiversity and natural ‘allies’ such as spiders, lizards, mantis and ladybugs help to keep harmful insects away so that the plants are naturally protected.

History

The Sencha tea leaf is first believed to have been introduced into Japan in the 17th century from China. Before this, Matcha was the preferred drink of choice in Japan. Sencha grew in popularity, and to this day remains the most popular variety of tea in Japan.

Lovely

I don’t buy my tea from anywhere else since I discovered clearspring. I love their ethics and that’s its family owned. This tea is bright but not at all bitter like some other green teas. Pleasant taste and would recommend.

Not a tea drinker

I am a coffee drinker but decided to give green tea a try. My big mistake was trying tea bags in the first instance yuk! Tried this loose tea and was very pleased I did, I found it quite palatable, not grassy. I am a convert to green tea.

Sencha green tea

The tea is ok but not as good as similar products from other suppliers I have used. Provides one cup from each 2 spoons of leaf whereas I'm used to getting 2 or even 3 brews from the same leaves. The flavour is not as strong or pleasing as rival suppliers - to my taste buds of course.

Hi Neal, thank you for sharing your thoughts on our Sencha Green Tea. We’re sorry it didn’t meet your expectations compared to other suppliers.

Tea flavour and brewing potential can vary, and we’d be happy to share tips on getting the most from the leaves if helpful. Your feedback is valuable, and we’ll pass it along to our team.

Thanks again for trying our tea and supporting organic products!

Nicest Sencha tea I've come across

This tea isn't inexpensive but taste great. It is a good balance between a nice bright flavour without being too grassy. My wife says it taste like grass clippings

Absolutely the BEST Green Tea that I've tasted!

Clearspring Organic Japanese Sencha Green Tea is very refreshing and has a lovely smooth, well-rounded taste. Not at all bitter like some other green teas that I've tasted in the past. I usually have to add a teaspoon of honey to my tea to counteract the bitterness, but NOT with this one! Added to that is the advantage that it is organic and sustainably produced! Definitely deserving of the 5 Star rating *****
