Discover the Essence of Matcha

Matcha has captivated tea lovers worldwide, yet its origins, unique qualities, and preparation remain unfamiliar to many. At Clearspring, we invite you to explore this vibrant green tea - steeped in tradition and crafted with care.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder, traditionally whisked with warm water to create a smooth, frothy infusion. While its origins trace back to China, it was in Japan during the 12th century that matcha found its spiritual home. Buddhist monks embraced it for its sustained energy release, supporting long hours of meditation. Today, matcha remains at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony - a ritual of precision, mindfulness, and respect.
Unlike other teas, which are steeped and discarded, matcha is made from whole tea leaves, carefully cultivated, shaded, and stone-ground to preserve their vibrant colour and rich nutritional profile.
Generations of Craftsmanship
Clearspring Organic Japanese Matcha is crafted by the Nagata family, third-generation artisan producers who have been using sustainable organic practices for decades. In 1974, they abandoned modern, chemical-dependent agriculture, embracing farming methods that promote biodiversity.
Grown in the remote, unpolluted hills of Uji, Japan - accessible only by foot - our matcha thrives in harmony with nature. The tea fields are home to a rich ecosystem of beneficial insects, including praying mantises and dragonflies, which naturally keep pests under control.
In the final weeks before harvest, the tea bushes are shaded to enhance their chlorophyll levels, deepening their vibrant green colour and increasing L-theanine, the amino acid responsible for matcha’s smooth, umami taste. Only the youngest, most tender leaves are handpicked, quickly steamed to preserve their delicate nutrients, then gently dried and stone-ground to a fine, silky powder—capturing the essence of the entire tea leaf.

Understanding Matcha Grades
While there is no official grading system, matcha is generally classified based on colour, texture, and intended use:
- Ceremonial Grade – The highest quality matcha, crafted from the youngest tea leaves. Vibrant green, smooth, and naturally sweet, it is best enjoyed pure, whisked with water.
- Premium Grade – A well-balanced matcha with a bright hue and a slightly bolder flavour. Ideal for daily drinking, lattes, and even baking.
Matcha for Every Moment
Beyond the traditional tea bowl, matcha’s smooth, umami-rich flavour makes it a perfect addition to lattes, smoothies, and baking. Whether you’re enjoying a moment of calm, seeking a natural energy boost, or experimenting in the kitchen, Clearspring Organic Matcha delivers an authentic taste of Japan’s revered tea culture.
