    Product weight: 25g

Wasabi is the hot and stimulating green paste that lends a characteristic, pungent taste to sushi dishes, dressings and dipping sauces. The wasabi plant, sometimes called Japanese horseradish, has long been used in Japan as an essential condiment for serving with sushi, soba and tofu and more recently to flavour dressings, dips and snacks.

Wasabi is a member of the Brassicaceae family which include cabbages, horseradish and mustard. It is the stem and not the root which is used to make the condiment wasabi. It has been cultivated in Japan since the 16th Century and it grows naturally along shaded riverbeds in mountain valleys in Japan. It takes two years to mature and is very perishable.

    Traditional vs Conventional Wasabi

Clearspring Wasabi powder contains real wasabi root, whereas most wasabi products consist of mustard or horseradish with green dyes and other additives. You can recognise its authenticity by its pale grey-green colour, which contrasts with the brighter green of dyed wasabi.

A Little goes a long way!

Strong and warming - I just have to perfect the art of mixing a very small amount for one person. A little goes a very long way! Perfect for the winter weather.

Disappointing - beware use by dates

This should not of course have 5 stars!

Disappointing - beware use by dates

My daughter found this to be bitter and also questioned its claims about the horseradish/wasabi content and so contacted Clearspring. When the eventual reply came back and the details of the tin were supplied, it was declared out of date and therefore not worth investigation! As it had been opened and tried within its use by date, this didn't make sense - and had they responded quicker, then this would not have been an issue....When this was put to them, they failed to respond - twice. Hence this review, reflecting our disappointment in the product and customer service. We have had no problems with them in the past but if they believe their products are liable to deteriorate a few days after they specify and this is not worth investigating, then probably best to avoid.

Dear Margery, thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

We're truly sorry about the situation with the slow response time from Quality and your dissatisfaction with the product.

Based on your feedback, despite being past its best-before date, we have decided to test the product against a newer batch, as we do take this seriously and strive to provide the best quality products we can.

There are many factors that contribute to the product quality/best-before-date claim, including how it's been stored, how long it's been opened etc. and we test our products with the ideal conditions.

Regarding the wasabi content, ours is actually higher than most other products on the market. Some contain no wasabi at all and most contain artificial preservatives and colours.

The horseradish and mustard are there to boost the heat, as wasabi on its own in this form would not achieve the desired result.

The only option we're aware of with higher wasabi content is fresh wasabi root, which is available in the UK, if interested. It's a fresh vegetable, so very different to our product.

We hope this answers some of your questions and we would also like to offer you a replacement product to try.

Great product!

All of Clearspring's Oriental products are top notch and this Wasabi is no exception. Much more 'authentic' tasting than most other commercial varieties which are basically just horseraddish powder with green dye. Makes for a really nice paste when mixed with water and works wonderfully in dressings and salads for a little kick.
