  • Ingredients: Organically grown roasted green tea leaves

    Product weight: 70g

Clearspring Organic Hojicha is grown in the luscious rolling hills around Kyoto and Kyushu, areas known for their ideal climatic and soil conditions which produce some of the finest tea in Japan. The unique character of Hojicha comes from ageing and roasting the tea leaves, giving them a distinct nutty aroma and smoky flavour. Whilst our Hojicha can be enjoyed at any time of the day, it is perfect after a meal or as a calming evening tea to help you unwind.

  • Third Generation Tea Family from Kyoto, Japan

In the hills around Kyoto, the third generation of the Nagata family use special organic methods, known as Nature Farming, to produce a range of exquisite green teas for Clearspring.

The ancient farming approach used by the Nagatas builds up soil vitality by maintaining a semi-wild environment, where the plants are not overly protected and gain nourishment from repeated applications of compost made from tea clippings and dried leaves, which together with regular mulching helps control weed growth and maintain soil moisture.

Whilst most tea farmers spray their plants with pesticides and herbicides 15-20 times a year, the Nagatas' tea bushes have a vigour that enables them to thrive without chemical inputs.

The Nagatas' yields may be lower than average but their plants have far less mould and blight. They remain productive for up to 40 years, twice as long as the typical tea bush treated with chemicals.

As well as growing tea, the Nagatas undertake the skilful blanching, drying and roasting processes to bring out the unique flavours of each individual blend.

I've found a new tea to love

This has instantly become a staple for me this autumn. It has the warming, woody, slightly neutral taste that I love about rooibos but whereas for me rooibos needs milk - meaning I can't drink it all day - this doesn't need milk to feel rich. I love how it manages to impart a comforting, toasty warmth while still feeling as fresh as a green tea.
And it's organic which is vital for me. A bag of loose leaf goes a long way, too.

Amazing all round tea.

Subtle smokey and woody notes whilst also being quite sweet. Works well both with or without milk. I do pick up on some nutty/caramel notes too. Overall, a very warming, autumn/winter hug in a mug.
